Sight words, also called high frequency words, are the most common words in the English language that children are encouraged to memorize. These are the words encountered most often in text (i.e. a, the, I, you, him, then, up, look, etc.).
Two of my children are in preschool right now, with one headed to kindergarten in the fall. Having a working knowledge of sight words is an important pre-reading skill to have.
While I’ve been teaching my children at home, I started incorporating sight word activities into our curriculum. The focus is on one word a week. We complete a sight word activity each day. Three of those activities are making a mini-book, flip book, and recreating sentences that use the word.
This is a super simple sight word mini-book. The sentences are short and predictable. They are designed for children to read them easily. Once colored, cut along the dark lines and staple together.
If your child isn’t quite reading yet, read the sentences to them and they can echo you. Make sure you child touches each word as they say it.
Using the same sentences from the mini-book, these flip books provide another opportunity to practice writing, recognizing, and reading the given sight word.
The student can either paste the solid word cut-outs, dotted lines cut-outs, or write the sight word in the space.
Again, this activity uses the same sentences as the previous activities. Teachers or students can cut up the sentences and rebuild them.
Mix up the words into a big pile, create a model sentence, and then have your child match up the words to create the other sentences. Then, your child can read the sentences to you. This is a great way to practice fluency.
