Teaching Adjectives and Verbs

Teaching adjectives and verbs was SO fun with this activity!

To prepare for them for this SUPER fun and ENGAGING activity, I explained that they would be using their five sense to experience popcorn – from the popping, to the smelling, to the tasting – I really wanted them to pay attention to details of the whole process.  Most of them hadn’t seen popcorn popping with an air popper before, and while you could use a microwave or even pre-popped popcorn – using the popper gave them a great visual for the lesson.

Beforehand, we went over the definition of an adjective and added it to to an anchor chart we were making, and I also passed out a response sheet for them to record adjectives about the popcorn to use during and after the popping.

Teaching your kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students about adjectives and verbs has never been MORE FUN! You'll use popping popcorn (either in a microwave or with an actual popcorn popper) to teach your students about adjectives and verbs, encouraging them to use their five senses to really experience the popcorn. This resource includes an engaging lesson plan, student activity sheet to use during instruction, adjectives and verbs sorting center and response sheet, craftivity, and 3 differentiated writing extension pages. Many teachers have used this during a formal observation with rave reviews from administration, but - most importantly - STUDENTS! I promise, your kiddos will LOVE IT!

Then, we all gathered around to watch the magic! They were truly amazed!

They completed their recording sheets and brought them to the floor in front of the anchor chart we were working on. We added their adjectives to popcorn pieces and pasted them to the chart.

Then, they cut out the pieces of popcorn and made a little craft with them, which we displayed in the hallway with our anchor chart for all to enjoy!

Because verbs were being taught around the same time, I also added this center to our literacy rotations.

Since I first created this activity, I also added some posters, verb options, and differentiated writing papers.

My kids LOVED this activity and I LOVED teaching it! It helped make an abstract concept more concrete…and it’s always fun to make and eat popcorn!
