Fun & Easy Spelling Activities for Word Work Centers

Independent word work centers are the perfect time to practice spelling in the classroom. There are tons of fun ways to practice, but I think you will really like these ideas. I just created a fun Spell Check Activity that makes the perfect phonics spelling literacy center. It’s self-checking and super easy to use. Check out this new resource and my other spelling activities and ideas below!

Use Spell Check to Improve Spelling

I’m excited to introduce my new self-checking phonics resource, Spell Check! These activities were designed with kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students in mind and are sure to keep them engaged while they learn to spell. The printables are a simple way to practice spelling patterns and encoding words and are supported by the Science of Reading.

With these activities, students will practice segmenting, spelling, and writing words. The best part, they are self-checking. Let me show you how they work.

How Do They Work?

I know it seems silly that pieces of paper can be self-checking, but they are. Usually it’s just digital resources that can self-check. But I found a way! Simply print the cards you want to use and fold them in half to create a table tent. The answers with the words will now be face down so students can’t see them while they are working.

Provide the students with their recording sheets and let them sound out each word. They will write their answers in the boxes. When they are done, they can unfold the table tent and compare their answers to the answer key. It’s that easy!

*Tip* – Laminate the recording sheets and use a dry erase marker so students can reuse the cards over and over again!

I like to color code my pages, so students know which colors they have done. Just print the worksheets on colored cardstock or construction paper.

Dot-A-Word Spelling Activity

The first step in mastering spelling is to learn phonemic awareness. This is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words. We can practice phonemic awareness by isolating sounds in words, blending sounds to make words, and sementing sounds within words.

One fun way to practice this is by using these Dot-A-Word printables. Students can write the missing sounds or use manipulatives to touch each sound as they work. Read more on this post about Teaching Students to Spell Words with Ease and grab some FREE Sound Boxes as well!
