How to use Reading Eggs…

In our home, screen time is very limited. My 10-year-old son gets just 30 minutes per day and my little ones, who are 2-years and 4-years-old get even less exposure – maybe 30 minutes all month (or less!). So, if I’m going to allow them to interact with a device, I want it to be meaningful (read: educational!). This is why I like Reading Eggs – because its engaging, entertaining, and educational.

This same rationale applies to the classroom. If you’re going to present your students with an app,  it’s imperative that it’s instructionally sound and engaging – especially when it comes to supplemental reading material. No app will ever take the place of a good reading teacher or quality children’s literature, but Reading Eggs can certainly be used as fine addition to independent centers, morning work, or for early-finishers.

In my professional opinion, Reading Eggs is best used to supplement, enhance, or provide additional practice based on your current reading curriculum.

What I love about Reading Eggs…

Because my littlest kiddos are preschoolers, I really appreciate Reading Eggs Junior because it addresses a lot of developmental skills. There are activities for matching, sorting, counting, colors, memory, the alphabet, alike and different, and more! Further, as the parent of a child with special needs who is delayed in some of these areas, any opportunity to get extra practice is welcomed.  And, teachers, you’re going to LOVE THIS: Reading Eggs includes interactive videos courtesy of Heidi Songs! If you teach in pre-k through 1st grade, you know just how much fun her songs and dances are to incorporate into your curriculum.

I also love that Reading Eggs is differentiated. Once you get into Reading Eggs – the space designed for ages 3- to 7-years-old – you’re met with a placement test based on the child’s reading skills. If your child doesn’t have any reading skills, they will begin with the first lesson and interact and move through a variety of phonics-based activities while opening reward eggs along the way.

I also love that it’s extremely kid-friendly. The colors are vibrant, the characters and stories are age-appropriate, the interface is easy to operate, and there is plenty of content to interact with to keep kiddos occupied. As a teacher, this is exactly what you want in an independent activity while you’re busy with a small group of students.
