One thing I’ve learned from teaching is that kiddos absolutely adore informational texts. They find factual information so intriguing, and they practically jump out of their seats at the opportunity to spout off their knowledge! Or wiggle fiercely when they’re seated in front of you on the floor, waving their hands wildly in the air. That mental image is probably more accurate.
Mrs. Mullins! Mrs. Mullins!
There were actual BONES in t-rex poop!
Dinosaurs were bigger than my house!
Mrs. Mullins, Mrs. Mullins!
Kids TOTALLY dig dinosaurs. #punny
(If you want to create some interest and intrigue – at any time of year – put thematic books on display on a Friday afternoon before dismissal and throw some caution tape across it. They LOVE getting a sneak peek of what’s coming the next week and are just itching to get to the reading center on Monday!)
While working on The Science of May, I came across some *new* favorites.
I am a HUGE fan of the Fly Guy series, especially since they were great for Becks when he was a new reader. However, I’m really impressed with the Fly Guy nonfiction books, too! They’re packed with information in an easy-to-follow format and are inexpensive enough to make a small group set.
And, how about that container of dinos for less than ten bucks! 60 of them! If you can’t find them at Target, Amazon has an alternative that I’ll link at the end of the post.
Some more of my favorites…
Oh, this book, you all. Hilarious! It’s actually used as a companion text for an extension activity in The Science of May, and your class will ADORE it.
As you can see, Rex decided to get in on the action. He’s been with me for awhile, always goofing off in the classroom…
Quit using your short arms as an excuse for not cooperating, Rex…

Some links you might find helpful while shopping for your thematic study of dinosaurs!
And, don’t forget, The Science of May has an entire WEEK worth of DINO-MITE fun, in addition to three other themes: Ocean Life, Ocean Creatures, & Kitchen Chemistry!
Hope you have a Tyrannosaurus Tuesday!
