What is a word work toolkit?

The Word Work Toolkit is a collection of objects that students can use during word work, small group, or literacy centers.

Purpose of kits

The purpose of the Word Work kits is to provide students with access to a variety of materials to help them complete word work-related tasks.

Kits should be:

•Individualized

•Easily-accessible

•Portable

Teachers should:

•Explicitly teach how to use kits

•Not put anything into kits that students haven’t been taught how to use

•Regularly add/remove/replace items as skills are taught

Students should be responsible for:

•Keeping kits in a safe spot

•Keeping materials neat and tidy

•Using materials purposefully

Storage and Organization

Here are a few options for organizing kits for individual student use. Typically, you can find these inexpensively during back to school season. I recommend adding these to school supply lists, if that is an option for your classroom.

What to include

The are MANY different items and combination of items to include in your students’ Word Work Kits. I will provide several suggestions for items to include, but please know that not all items should be within a kit all at the same time. Only put items in the kit that you have explicitly taught students to use. You will likely find yourself adding, removing, and replacing items throughout the year as skills are developing and mastered.
