Prior to creating teaching resources and curriculum, I was most recently an interventionist under the Title I umbrella for grade K-5. Even though I was only hired on a part-time basis, I was so stinking busy. My responsibilities included coordinating the intervention schedule school-wide, managing a team of para-educators who pushed in and pulled out of classrooms daily for various reading and math interventions, as well as holding small groups for kindergarten, third grade, and fifth grade. Oh, and how can I forget all the data collection, analysis, and presentation…and then tailoring student plans accordingly? Shoo! Breaking into a sweat just thinking about it!
My kindergarten and first grade sweeties were my favorite. They were highly motivated to learn and always gave me 100% effort during our 20-minute small group each day. After my experiences with them, I really took and interest into creating resources that could meet their needs in a fun and effective manner. The resource pictured below was my favorite for letter identification and recognition and continues to be used in classrooms across the nation every year.
I then developed this one to use with first graders who struggled with CVC words and short vowels, though it could definitely be used for on-level or above-grade level instruction in both kindergarten and first grade, too.
This resource includes three different mini-books that use the short vowel pattern, along with select sight words. The mini-books can be used to teach the pattern, practice reading, highlighting the CVC words, and underlining sight words. Further, there are a set of flashcards for each book that include all the words found within the book, picture cards, and spinner games (with 8 activity sheets). There are also a set of flashcards that includes the short a pattern + nonsense words for further practice.
Here’s a better picture of what’s included and how to use each set…
There are sets for each vowel OR a bundle option.
Short A | Short E | Short I | Short O | Short U | Short Vowel BUNDLE
