Vocabulary Parade Fun!

Slide1

Vocabulary has always been one of my favorite things to teach.  I absolutely love WORDS! That’s why I was just over-the-moon when Becks brought home information about The Second Grade Vocabulary Parade at his school based on the book Miss Alaineus.

Miss Alaineus was one of the books I learned about in an undergrad class, and immediately added it to my Christmas list that year (because what soon-to-be-teacher doesn’t ask for kid lit and Mr. Sketch Markers?!).  The story tells about sweet Sage who endures a vocabulary disaster, but turns her error into an amazing Vocabulary Parade experience!  You. Have. To. Read. It! (Click the picture below to check it out.)

At Becks’ school, each student in the five second grade classrooms was given a word that he or she defined, and then brought home with instructions for making a Vocabulary Parade costume in the form of a family project.  Becks’ word was limousine, which was so fitting considering he’d seen an actual limo at my sister’s wedding the weekend before.  His ring bearer garb doubled nicely as a that of a limo driver 😉

At the parade, the teacher called each student’s word and then he or she got to parade across the gym in front of family and the entire student body!  What a great experience for all! I wish I could show you some of the other students’ costumes because they were just precious.  I was so impressed by how much time and effort the students and teachers put into the event.

And, while we’re on the topic, here are some of my favorite vocabulary must-haves…

During my time as a Title I teacher, I read the book Word Nerds and LOVED every word of it.  I wrote a post all about it HERE, and even presented it to our school during PLC meetings one day.  I highly recommend it.  Super informational and the practices within are simple to implement.

I also have a resource in my TpT shop that you might be interested in – Interactive Vocabulary Notebooks.  It’s kinda like an eBook filled with ideas and printables for vocabulary instruction!
