Tired of lengthy book reports your kiddos dread? In this post, I will introduce several condensed alternatives to the traditional book report that are fun, engaging and perfect for students from kindergarten thru fifth grade. Help your students learn to LOVE reading! Each of the book report alternatives includes templates, photographs and easy-to-follow directions that are a cinch for teachers to implement and great for students to complete after reading their favorite books!
TABBED BOOKS
The Tabbed Book concept includes booklets with three tabs: about, review, and favorites. Â Kiddos can use words and/or pictures to help them complete the booklet. Simple, yet efficient!
EMOJI BOOKMARKS
What kid doesn’t love a good emoji?! These emoji bookmarks allow students to provide a quick review AND artistically express their thoughts on what they read using emojis! Of course, they can be kept and used as bookmarks after the fact as well.
IF THIS BOOK COULD TALK
This foldable concept is super cute and FUN! After your kids read a book, you’ll provide them with the If This Book Could Talk printable speech bubble. You’ll copy it double-sided with the interior of the speech bubble that reads, It Would Say…
Then, on the inside of the foldable, students will write form the perspective of the book and tell why the book thinks it would be a good pick for a reader!
FAVORITE BOOK LOVE NOTES
So, what could be sweeter than leaving a little love note on your favorite book?! Â This is a VERY simple, low-prep activity that your kids will LOVE. Learn more HERE!
PICK ME STICKY NOTES
This activity is last, but certainly not least — and, it’s a VERY easy way for a child to provide feedback on a book he or she has finished reading.  Simply print off the Pick Me! Pick Me! printable onto a page of sticky notes (printing template included) and, voila, your kiddos can instantly provide mini critiques or teasers of their favorite books! They can be as simple or as descriptive as you would like.
Hopefully, you’ve seen something your students will love and enjoy doing. If you use any of these book report alternatives in your classroom, I’d love to see! Please tag me on Instagram @babblingabby! Happy reading!
