With many schools closed due to COVID-19, a large number of us are teaching from home during the Coronavirus for the next several weeks. As a certified K-5 educator who taught kindergarten and first grade, I am more than happy to share what we are doing in our home to stay on top of curriculum while quarantined at home.

Create a Schedule

It’s easiest for me to function when I have a schedule in place, so we are using this editable one from The Basic Life of Brooke. It’s a FREE download in her TpT shop. She also includes a lesson plan template, too.

Incentive Chart

My kids are highly motivated by iPad time, so I whipped up these incentive charts in an effort to help get them through our school day. You could easily make your own or feel free to print these from the link below.

They get a stick for completing tasks, doing something kind, listening and following directions, etc. Once they fill the chart, they are given access to an iPad for a set amount of time. If you don’t have stickers on hand, drawing in smiley faces or stars would work just as well.

Making Names Hide-n-Seek

• Write the letters of your child’s name on sticky-notes.
• Place the sticky notes out of order around a room
• Have your child locate the letters in their name and collect the sticky-notes
• Arrange the letters in their name in the correct order
• Follow up by writing their names

Letter of the Week Work

We focused on the letter Vv today and made this graphic inspired by our friend, Greg, at The Kindergarten Smorgasbord.

My kids’ teachers uploaded their normal letter worksheets into a Google drive for us to access, but you can download an entire pack of alphabet worksheets for free right here.

Brain Breaks

Plenty of brain breaks are necessary as we do school at home. We love Go Noodle! Click the graphic below to join!

Sight Word Work

Today, I introduced the sight word a. We made a simple mini-book that you can download below. Lots of skill work included:

• Coloring the book (fine motor)
• Highlighting the letter a (fine motor, reading)
• Cutting out the book (fine motor)
• Reading the book (directionality, reading)

Counting to 100

Both of my kiddos are working on their addresses, phone numbers, and counting to 100. EASY skills to work on at home. Today, we bounced a ball while we counted. Not only does it get them up and moving, but it also works on hand-eye-coordination. Winning!
