Distance Learning for Preschool

Distance learning for preschool resources found here! Everything from literacy to math to movement to fine motor and more!

The activities in this post are great to use while at home during the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak. As a certified K-5 educator who taught kindergarten and first grade, I am sharing what we are doing in our home to stay on top of curriculum while quarantined at home. Of course, you can use them anytime of year in the home or classroom, too!

PLEASE NOTE: Life is busy as a work-at-home / stay-at-home/ homeschooling mama right now, so my directions here will be brief! Please follow me on Instagram @babblingabby where I will be sharing my daily activities and saving them in a story highlight!

Painter Tape Artwork

Well, this project started off looking like it would go off without a hitch. Similar to the W Chalk Art we did last week, I used painter’s tape to section off the paper into various shapes.

The kiddos used oil pastels to color in the sections.

Unfortunately, the paper that I used peeled right off with the tape when we removed it. BUMMER! I think it would’ve been fine with a smooth cardstock. Live and learn.

Letter of the Week

Continuing on with what the kids were doing in their preschool classes, we started working on the letter Xx today. I created a chart and we filled it with Xx words that they suggested. Then, we started working on a Letter X Worksheet.

Both kids surprised me by really struggling to make Xes! They made a lot of lowercase t-looking letters, so I had to pivot and do a little reteaching. I pulled out some tracing practice that included slanted lines, which they did great at!

Good teachers frequently have to evaluate what they’re doing while they’re teaching, so that’s just what I did. We’ll definitely practice slanted lines again before we get back to that X worksheet. DOWNLOAD SLANTED LINES PRACTICE PAGES

Simple Strip Puzzles

Last week, we started working on simple strip puzzles. These are pictures overlaid with a grid that is cut into strips. The strips are then shuffled and rearranged to create the original image. The stripes are glued on top of a gridded template, so that they have a guide for their picture.

I let the kids pick out the pictures they wanted to make, which helps engage them and take ownership for their learning. Today, they chose a hamburger and a gumball machine!

Sight Word of the Week: I

We’ve been focusing on one sight word a week since we began preschool at home two weeks ago. This week, they’re working on the word I. The worked on a sight word mini-reader today, highlighting the word and coloring the book. DOWNLOAD I MINI BOOK (Previous mini-books: a and the)

Social Emotional Learning + Movement

Using this set of Teach Me Tags, we discussed and acted out the emotions shown on the cards. They did a great job showing the feelings on their faces!

Especially during this stressful time, it can be important for children to talk about their feelings. These cards can help them name the different emotions they’re feeling.

There are many different activities that you could do with this set of cards, besides just acting out the emotions. Here are a few ideas…

Counting Quantities to 10

We ordered numerals 1 to 10 using the cut-outs from this free number sense toolkit. I gave each one five numerals.

We counted from one to ten and they pushed their numerals into the correct order to form a number line on the floor.

Then, I gave each child ten Duplo blocks. I gave them various quantities to count and stack. They snapped them to a car and wheeled their block stack to the correct numeral.

They also compared their block stacks to one another to see who had more and who had less. So much you could do with these simple materials!

Color of the Week: Orange

Lastly, we completed color work. First, I had them find all the orange colored crayons. I wrote the word orange on a blank piece of paper and let them use all the different shades to do some scribble art. (And, permission to scribble is alway fun!)

Then, they completed a Color, Trace, and Find activity.
