First Grade RTI: Phonological Awareness & More

This phonological awareness intervention pack is perfect for K-1st graders. With 20+ engaging activities, it supports phonics and decoding skills.

What is Phonological Awareness?

Phonological awareness is to the ability to identify and manipulate the sounds of language. It involves:

  1. understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds, known as phonemes, and
  2. being able to recognize and distinguish between those sounds.

Phonological awareness includes skills, such as…

  • rhyming,
  • segmenting words into individual sounds,
  • blending sounds to form words,
  • and manipulating sounds within words.

These skills are important for the development of reading and writing abilities, as they form the foundation for phonics instruction and the ability to decode and spell words. Phonological awareness is developed through exposure to spoken language and explicit instruction in phonological skills.

How to Teach Phonological Awareness in the 1st Grade Classroom

Teaching phonological awareness in 1st grade can be a fun and engaging experience for both you and your students! Here are some strategies that you can use in your 1st grade classroom:

  • Rhyming: Encourage students to identify and generate rhyming words. Use nursery rhymes, songs, and poems to teach students to recognize the sounds at the end of words that are the same.
  • Syllables: Teach students to count syllables in words. Have students clap or stomp out the syllables in words to help them recognize how many syllables each word has.
  • Beginning Sounds: Teach students to identify the first sound in words. Play games where students have to identify the beginning sound in a given word.
  • Ending Sounds: Teach students to identify the last sound in words. Play games where students have to identify the ending sound in a given word.
  • Segmenting Words: Teach students to segment words into individual sounds. Start with simple words with only two or three sounds and gradually move to more complex words.
  • Blending Sounds: Teach students to blend individual sounds into words. Use letter tiles or magnetic letters to help students blend sounds together to make words.
  • Phonemic Awareness Games: Play phonemic awareness games like “I Spy” or “Simon Says” to help students practice phonemic awareness skills in a fun and engaging way.
  • Read Alouds: Read aloud to students and emphasize the sounds in words. Have students identify rhyming words, syllables, beginning and ending sounds, and segment words into individual sounds.

By incorporating these strategies into your 1st grade classroom, you can help your students develop their phonological awareness skills and set them up for success in reading and language development.
