How To Build Mastery of Letter Identification and Recognition

Within the past few years, many students have fallen behind with their letter identification and recognition skills. Whether it was because of missed school days, sickness, the pandemic or personal reasons, academia has seen a decline in phonics skills. Building that mastery back up doesn’t have to be complicated! There are many ways to practice to mastery, but intervention resources like the ones in this post have been proven extremely useful.

Kindergarten Alphabet and Letter Activities Intervention for RTI

Don’t let the word intervention scare you! Intervention resources, and any resources for that matter, can be used in a wide variety of ways. For example, these Alphabet and Letter Activities are perfect for supplementing your kindergarten phonics instruction. As a bonus, they are also great resources for students who are struggling to grasp the concept of letter identification and recognition.

This resource covers all 26 letters of the alphabet so students can master each one in their own time. For each letter, there are five different activity mats. You can laminate these mats to use over and over or print them on paper for students to use once and take home.

The intervention activities include:

  • Combination Say It, Find It, Read It, Write it {plus a black and white master worksheet option and half-sheets assessment based off this mat}
  • Letter Display Mat (for recognition, sorting, tracing)
  • Highlight to Practice Letter ID
  • Letter Naming Fluency
  • Letter Writing

Kindergarten Intervention and Letter Sounds RTI Curriculum for Learning Alphabet

Practice all 26 letters, including short vowel sounds with these fun and colorful Intervention and Letter Sounds mats. Each letter comes with 7 different activities listed below. The activities are fantastic for small groups, independent work stations, extra practice and intervention. The sheets can be printed onto paper and used once or laminated to use more than once with a dry erase marker.

  • Focus Letter Mat (vowels in red, consonants in blue, each focus mat contains the upper- and lowercase letter and 3 labeled pictures that begin with the sound)
  • Sound Warm Up (letter-sound correspondence fluency)
  • Sound Off (student generated begininng sound word list)
  • Letter Sound Pictures (6 pictures for each letter with the first letter omitted; only 4 for X)
  • Check Yourself (student self-assessment; saying picture name and identifying whether or not it begins with the focus letter)
  • Listen Up (discriminating between words that begin with the focus letter and those that don’t)
  • Letter-Sound Assessment (cumulative assessment over learned skills)

Kindergarten and First Grade Phonics CVC Words Intervention RTI

After mastering letters and their sounds, students can begin putting those sounds together to make words. A three letter word with a short vowel is a CVC word (consonant-vowel-consonant). Students in kindergarten usually master these types of words by the time they head to first grade. This CVC Words Intervention is a great resource for first graders who need extra help or for small group instruction in kindergarten.

This resource helps students master blending and segmenting short vowel words. Students tap out each individual sound and then blend them together. There are also matching pictures for students to use if they are struggling. I like to laminate the pieces and use them in smaller groups.

Using a combination of these resources will help your students who are struggling to catch up with their letter identification and recognition. Use them as a whole group, small group or individually to work on specific skills. Hopefully, with a little practice, they’ll be right where they need to be in no time.
