Preschool and Kindergarten Learning at Home

This post shares preschool and kindergarten learning at home ideas and activities to use while at home during the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak. As a certified K-5 educator who taught kindergarten and first grade, I am sharing what we are doing in our home to stay on top of curriculum while quarantined at home. Of course, you can use them anytime of year in the home or classroom, too!

PLEASE NOTE: Life is busy as a work-at-home / stay-at-home/ homeschooling mama right now, so my directions here will be brief! Please follow me on Instagram @babblingabby where I will be sharing my daily activities and saving them in a story highlight!

Ohhhhhhh, my! I forgot just how challenging it is to teach on a Friday! Today was a little shorter, a little scattered, and a lot flexible. Which was just fine with me. The warm weather treated us to a long walk, worm digging and bike rides in the cul-de-sac. We did manage to sneak in a little schoolwork, though…

Alphabet Picture Match

We started today with a quick alphabet review. I gave the kids a set of picture cards and they had to match the picture to the correct beginning letter sound.

The felt pocket chart is actually from the Target Dollar Spot last season, but this one is similar.

If you have your kiddos do something like this, teach them to say the name of the picture and to listen for the first sound. (“/b/ /b/ ball) This is a good phonemic awareness practice. DOWNLOAD ALPHABET PICTURE CARDS

A full set of alphabet flashcards including upper- and lowercase letters, paths of motion, and 2 additional sets of picture cards can be found HERE. These can also be useful for many at-home activities.

Daily Read Aloud

We watched Click Clack Moo Cows That Type on Vooks! If you haven’t started your free trial of this amazing service, what are you waiting for?! It’s SO worth it. The kids love watching their favorite picture books come to life! Oh, and what’s a read aloud without a delicious snack of Lucky Charms?!

Writing Activity

We connected the letter writing back and forth between the cows and Farmer Brown with writing letters of our own. Being stuck inside, isolated from our family and friends, we decided we’d send them an old fashioned letter to tell them something we did this past week at home.

This was a very basic activity and they got to practice a little name writing, too! I would say they’re favorite part was walking to the mailbox to mail the letters themselves. DOWNLOAD LETTER TEMPLATE

Brain Break

It was finally nice enough to get outside for a little outdoor fun today. The kids took full advantage of it with multiple trips to jump on the trampoline.

Patterning Craft

I thought we’d do a quick patterning craft today, and…well…quickly realized it wasn’t going to be a quick activity! We will revisit this activity next week after I spend some more time teaching them about patterning.

Basically, though, you give the kids construction paper ‘clothes’ and they create patterns on the clothing item. You can use stickers, markers, crayons, daubers, or whatever to make patterns.

GoNoodle has a great interactive video to go along with patterning called Banana, Banana, Meatball! It’s super fun, encourages movement, and your kids will think it’s a hoot.

You can get a full set of patterning clothes HERE, or additional math crafts HERE.

Alphabet Trash It! Game

Remember the sticky note alphabet wall we made? Well, I saved the stickies so that we could use them to play Trash It! today.

This game is EASY. But, engaging and super fun for the kids. You could do this with any number of skills and could adapt this activity for review of content at any grade level.

For this game of Trash It!, they grabbed a sticky note and read the letter on it. Then, if correct, they could crumble the letter and toss it into the trash. We used an old oatmeal container, but you could use an actual trash can or any type of container.

Letter of the Week Activity

Today was the last day we worked on the letter Vv. We concluded it with naming pictures that began with Vv and created a little minibook full of Vv words.

This was another good opportunity to work on fine motor skills – cutting with scissors and coloring. DOWNLOAD Vv MINI BOOK

The Vv activities are part of a larger resource dedicated just to the letter Vv! I have these activities for every letter of the alphabet, or it can be found in an entire alphabet curriculum.

Ten Frame Activity

We closed out today with more ten frame fun. This is a skill we will practice over and over as we build numbers. DOWNLOAD TEN FRAME ACTIVITIES FROM THIS POST
